Today’s daily prompt: What’s the one piece of advice you wish someone had given you a year (or five, or ten…) ago? https://dailypost.wordpress.com/dp_prompt/powerful-suggestion/
I think I may have been given this advice but I’m not sure it was drilled in hard enough. The first piece of advice is not to take life too seriously. Be silly, laugh and find enjoyment in everything you can.
The second is to tell people who constantly have an opinion of who you are and how you live to mind their own business. People can make me feel pretty crappy with constant replay and criticism of my every action. How I raise my kids, what I teach them is important or not, and whether I choose to work or not is none of anyone’s business. In fact, their opinions are not warranted or wanted. I wish someone told me to put people in their place from the very beginning. Put people in their place and nip the disrespect and criticism in the bud as soon as it starts to bud.
How about you? What advice do you wish you were given years ago?
I wish I was given those words of advice as well. Also, I wish I would have been told that college isn’t what it’s cut out to be. It’s all a business and once you become a part of it, it doesn’t make sense for you to ever stop because if you do, you’re screwed!

Did you get sucked into that whole college route as well?

I went to school for nursing and then spent years home raising kids so now I would have to start from scratch 😦 I did it to myself. What’s your story?

Nursing? What’s that like? I have interest in going to medical school but I think I need to satisfy some prerequisites first. Oh no, are you still paying the price for stopping? My story is that I graduated from high school in 2009 at the age of 17. My high school made it an assignment to apply to college or write why we chose to go to the military instead. I was only presented with two options so I went the college route. Upon finishing high school, I knew I wanted to be a state trooper. Many would say that one does need to go to college in order to be a law enforcement official. That’s true in many cases but I felt that furthering my education would make me an ideal candidate. Boy, was I wrong. These local and state law enforcement agencies give preference to Veterans, not those with college degrees. In my state you need to be 21 years old and have a high school diploma or GED in order to even take the civil service exam. I took the test and scored extremely well too but since I am not a veteran, I was never considered. Another thing that bothered me was that they stopped at a high school diploma. At the time, I had a Bachelor’s Degree under my belt. They never knew this because I was never considered. Had they considered me, they would have known I had a bachelor’s degree and I was on my way getting my masters degree. It’s kind of scary to think that some police officers aren’t the brightest of people. I don’t see how a veteran should have preference over someone with so many degrees. So with that being said, I decide to aim higher and pursue something federal or legal related which is why I’m going for my Juris Doctorate now.

Life is just plain unfair. Certain people get special treatment. Period. It sucks. I know so many that go to college and find jobs where they can barely make ends meet. I feel bad for young people today starting out with all these school loans. It seems one goes furthest when there are connections involved. It’s not what you know but who you know. Your situation is just awful. I’m sorry you had to go through that disappointment.

Unfortunately that’s just how it work nowadays. On the bright side, it has motivated me to just go to school for life. I cannot afford to stop because like you said, the jobs may not make ends meet and if I have to pay back student loans on top of that then I’m screwed!

Yeah, that’s really tough. I hope it all pays off for you in the end 😉

It is but I’m sure it will! Do you plan on ever going back?

I won’t need to go back to school just start all over in the workplace. For now I am volunteering at Hospice. I start next week. Hands on emotional and spiritual care is why I went into nursing in the first place. These days it’s more about charting and paperwork 😦

My aunt does hospice. I don’t know how you guys do it but I give you both props. I’m glad you’re getting back into it. I’m sure you still have it and it’ll only be a matter of time before you’re getting paid for it 🙂

I hope so. We move a lot so I didn’t want to pay for a license in another state. Didn’t get one here because I didn’t expect to stay this long 😉

So are you getting one there because you will be staying? 🙂

I don’t like it here and we are so far away from family. Education system is ranked 48th out of the 50 states and not much to do.

Where are you? My family is on the east coast. Don’t want to go back there but I really wish I was close enough to hop on a car and be there when I want to be. Airfare is so expensive these days 😦
