This is What Too Much Looks Like


For those of you who like to argue the school topic with me, I want to share this picture. 

 This poor kid has 2 solid days of some weird testing to determine his strength and weaknesses and 3 chapter tests on Friday. He is completely wiped out. Too much is too much.


A Little Bit of Gratitude


Somedays it’s easy to list things to be grateful for. Today is one of those days. The weather is absolutely beautiful. There is a cool breeze and nothing makes me happier than sporting my most comfortable sweatshirt. I do not have a single ounce of anxiety today and I am loving this amazing wave of calm that has luckily embraced me. I even snuck a few minutes of quality time in when I met my husband for lunch earlier. I love days like this when my heart is full. How is your day going today? What are you grateful for?

When You’re Feeling Lost


I was remembering something that happened a few years ago during our visit to Italy. I remember looking at things to do there and one particular town caught my eye. It was quaint and beautiful, everything I imagined a small town in Italy to be. I remember the frustration over buying our ticket and trying to figure out which platform was the one to board our train. Finally, we were in our seats and the sound of us rolling down the tracks put me right to sleep. We had been going non stop and we had to catch a few zzz’s whenever the schedule allowed.The problem was, my husband fell asleep too so now we had an 11 and 8 year old navigating for us. My daughter eventually woke us up to let us know we had reached our stop and we exited the train. It only took a moment to realize we were in the wrong place. Where were the rolling hills? This place was as flat as a pancake and the whole town seemed abandoned. Luckily there was a McDonalds but we quickly realized no one spoke a word of English. When we said the name of the town, the workers pointed to the right and made a walking motion with their fingers while shaking their head no. We knew now it was too far to walk. We went outside and saw a bus stop and stood there hoping we would figure out what to do. The man there knew we were visitors and pointed to a small shop across the street. My husband went to check it out and came back with four bus tokens. Everytime the train would stop, the man would shake his head no until finally I recognized the town from the pictures and he pointed for us to get off.

The lesson is similar to the one I posted yesterday. There will be times we find ourselves lost in a place we don’t want to be. We may feel scared and panicked and our instinct may be to run as fast as we can. Running in the wrong direction won’t get us anywhere. We must be patient and calm and find a solution despite how uncomfortable we may feel. When we are quiet and settle in, the answers will come. Everything we need will be right there to get us from point A to point B. We just have to believe.    

One Thing At A Time


After feeling knocked down yesterday, I’ve decided today will be a one foot in front of the other day. It’s easy to draw that black cloud of doom and gloom directly over my head when I focus too far in the future. It’s no wonder I get swept away in feeling so overwhelmed. It’s important to take things one day at a time so I can keep moving slowly in the right direction. Slowly is better than not moving at all. Projecting thoughts away from today results in feeling stuck and helpless with no way out. Taking one thing at a time allows me the energy, perseverance, and confidence to tackle everything I need to do today so I can walk into tomorrow feeling prepared and ready for whatever arrives. Don’t defeat yourself and your purpose by putting unnecessary pressure on yourself. That is guaranteed to get you nowhere. Believe me, I know.

Do You Know the Difference?


I sat at the dinner table tonight and I asked each of my kids the same two questions. I pointed to two body parts and asked them to tell me what they were. Both answered breast and thigh and I was elated they knew the difference. Obviously the man at the meat counter wasn’t as smart and needs to study the parts of a chicken a bit longer before he serves them to customers. I was really looking forward to that chicken breast. Oh well.

From My Mat To Yours


There is a pose in yoga that I find really uncomfortable. It’s called pigeon pose and it’s hard for me to settle into because I have really tight hips. Today, the more I relaxed, the more comfortable it became. Everytime I would exhale, I would focus on relaxing into the pose until finally, it started to feel really good. It reminded me to stop fighting against the situations that make me feel uncomfortable. Like in yoga, sometimes life requires us to settle in and give up our desire and instinct to resist whatever it is that is causing us to feel uneasy and stressed. Sometimes it is necessary to breathe into where we are until the struggle inside of us starts to subside. It is in that moment, that place, where we are able to relax enough to become unstuck from the emotions that tie us to a particular event. The theme for today, the reoccurring message seems to be, relax, breath and just let go. From my mat to yours, namaste.
